From Daniel George (Nov 2013):
Matthew Miles Murkovic (Lezark) 1895-1960 son of Miles and Amanda Murkovic  (sisters Mary & Anna)

Daniel mother's father, Matthew Miles Murkovic (MMM) left Croatia as WWI was beginning. Daniel was told MMM was from the town of Cernika [DM: Cernik?], but something may have been lost in translation. Daniel was told MMM came through Canada to visit his uncle Peter in Glidden, Wisc. [DM: Check Canadian immigration records and Sault Ste. Marie crossings]  Peter was known to be in the logging business.  Matthew Miles traveled with his cousin Peter to look for work in Kentucky...none was there and cousin Peter returned to Wisconsin while Matthew Miles continued on to the coal mines of West Virginia where he found work and met Anna Magdaline Lezark, the daughter of a Czech coal miner whose wife was Ukranian.
Anna had two daughters from a previous marriage and had two children by Matthew Miles.  When they married Matthew Miles took her last name (Daniel's guess because she was American by birth) [DM: maybe to make it easier on Anna and her two daughters? maybe daughters were originally first husband's name, back to Anna's maiden name and now a new marriage would be too much change for them? Even if this was her first husband's name, it may still have been easier/cheaper for Matthew to change than to marry and adopt the 2 girls].  Their children Joseph Matthew and Margery June were raised with the last name Lezark (though they really should have been Murkovics).  Joe Matthew passed (Nov 2, 2013), a few days shy of his 89th birthday (Nov 10, 2013). Danils's mother was born in Milwaukee, raised in Chicago.

Though Matthew Miles lost touch with his relatives, Daniel found a postcard he had written to his cousin Peter but never mailed.  Daniel was told that his grandmother sent a note to that address (in Glidden) at the time of his death.  He doesn't know if it was received.
