Joe (1872-?) & Mary(1881-?)

Marija (Mary) Murkovic (29, born c.1880) arrived in the US on the s.s.Chicago with her son Ivan (John) (6, born c.1903) on 19 (23?) Feb 1909. Her father was Tome in Stajnica and she was going to her husband Josip (Joe) Murkovic in Calumet, Michigan.

Some 20 years later, in the 1920 census in Jacobs, Ashland, Wisconsin, we find: Joe Murkovic (48 born c.1872) and Mary Murkovic (39 born c.1881), originally from Jezerane and they were boarding house owners. Their boarding house neighbours were his younger brother Peter and Peter's wife Lucy Murkovich. Joe and Mary had three children: John (Ivan) (16, born c.1904), Margaret (12, born c.1908) and Mary (9, born c.1911).

On July 10, 1924 Mary Murkovic arrived in NY. She was 45 years old (i.e. b.1879). Last permanent address = Glidden; father is Ivan Stefanic from Stajnica. Husband= Joseph Murkovich, Box I06 Glidden, WI; Had $25; she had entered USA in 1909 and earlier in April 1924; gray hair, black eyes.

Per Zora/Tom, they subsequently moved to Superior, WI.

Their son John Murkovic (1903-1966) married Sophie Luzaich (1 July 1913, Duluth - 7 Sep 1998, Superior). John Murkovich, of Superior, Douglas County, Wis. was a Democrat and a member of Wisconsin Democratic State Central Committee, 1954. Sophie died in Minneapolis, MN some years after John. They had no surviving children. Both are buried in the Calvary Cemetery, South Superior Douglas County, WI.

Nothing more is known about the other two daughters Margaret (1908-?) and Mary (1911-?).

Per Zora Kundinger, two daughters were adopted. Q. Was that Margaret and Mary or did John and Sophie adopt 2 daughters?

Question: Could this Joe be the "Joso" uncle that Petar Spreic (Sprejc) went to visit in 1933? It's the wrong town, but still...

Interestingly, there are Spreic's in the family. Joe's mother was Katherine Spraitz (1828-1912)
